In northeastern Spain lie the Pyrenees, mountains which it shares with neighboring France. Spain also has several other mountain ranges. The Central Sierra, which run from the southwest to the northeast, the Cantabrian Mountains, to the northwest, the Iberian Cordillera, to the northeast, and the Sierra Morena, which can be found in the south. http://haciendosnow.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/pirineos.jpg
Spain has lots of rivers and streams. However, five rivers which are significant are, from north to south, the Ebro river (emptying into the Mediterranean), the Duero, the Tagus, the Guadiana, and the Guadalquivir rivers (emptying into the Atlantic).
This the Ebro depression. The river flows until the Mediterranean Sea ending in a delta shape. Spanish rivers are characterised by their irregularity, the assimetry of the slopes and no almost importance in their lakes and lagoons. The Spanish watersheds are three: Mediterranean watershed, Atlantic wathershed and Cantabric watershed. We can classify the Spanish rivers according to:
Rivers of the plateau
Rivers of the depressions
Levantine rivers
Penibetic rivers
Cantabric rivers
Galician rivers
In many cases, the 70% of the anual water contributions are concentrated in few months. This irregular hidrographic contribution is due to the irregular geographical features in our country and to the fluctuating flows along the year.
"Sunny" Spain? Spain has several climates due to varying terrains and winds coming from the oceans which surround it. There is a Mediterranean climate throughout the majority of Spain. In the north, from Galicia in the Northwest to Catalunya in the Northeast, there is plenty of rainfall, with a colder average temperature than the rest of Spain, although it is warmer along the coastal areas. The Balearic islands have a generally mild climate. The southern area of the country experiences more consistently hotter temperatures and infrequent precipitation all year long. The central areas of the country often have very hot summers and cool winters. The Canary Islands, near Africa, have a subtropical, warm climate.
Spain has got seventeen Autonomous Communities and two Autonomous Cities: Ceuta and Melilla. In the Peninsula there are fifteen and two archipielagos: Canary Island and Balearic Island. In the Peninsula, the seventeen Autonomous Communities are: Galicia, Principality of Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country, Navarra, Aragón, Catalonia, Castile León, La Rioja, Community of Madrid, Castile La Mancha, Community of Valencia,Extremadura and Andalusia.
The capital of Spain is Madrid, and it is in the centre of the country. In Spain the oficial language of the mayority of the Autonomous Communities is Spanish Language, but there are some communities with two oficial languages. For example, in Galicia, people speak Galician and Spanish Languages, in the Basque Country, people speak Euskera and Spanish languages, in Catalonia the oficial languages are Catalan and Spanish languages. MIGRATION IN SPAIN Population in Spain has changed and increased in the last decades. Historically, Spain has been an emigratory country. Spanish people have emigrated to foreign countries like for example: Germany, France, Argentina, etc. But, recently, people from other countries have inmigrated to Spain, for example, people from Rumania, Morroco or countries from South America. These people are looking for a better style of life.
There are also people who emigrante from the villages and towns to the big cities. For this reason, villages and towns in some communities like Castile León and La Rioja are decreasing the population, and the capitals and important cities are increasing the population. These people are looking for more opportunities to work and services.
ECONOMICAL SECTORS
Since 1940s there has been an important revolution in the economy of Spain. Primary sector was the basic element of the Spanish economy. But since 1984, secondary and tertiary sectors have become in the most important economical aspects. In primary sector, we distinguish cereals cultivated like wheat in the Mesetas and Andalusia. Rice is cultivated in Catalonia and Valencia and corn in Galicia. Fruit and vegetables are cultivated in Valencia and Catalonia, and potatoes and vegetables in the atlantic climate.
Animal farms are also important. Cows and pigs are the most important farm animals. Cows in Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria to produce milk. Pigs in Extremadura and Andalucía to produce ham and meat. In the interior sheep is the most important farm animal. In the coast fishing is an important activity for the Spanish economy.
